I've slowly been searching for long shelf life gluten-free food items for my emergency kit. Recently I attended a community workshop on preparing for an emergency. We were given information on preparing for a 72 hour evacuation kit and for a more robust shelter-in-place kit. It got me thinking about what types of gluten-free foods I'd like to put in my kit.
Of course I have my favourite gluten-free granola bars. But, I wanted to have a variety of foods that are gluten-free, have a long shelf life, are not too expensive, and are tasty.
I decided to start by checking out Dollarama, because when I travel around Canada, I often go to Dollarama to pick up some inexpensive gluten-free food products, and came across this potato salad. It is Carretilla's gluten-free Potato Salad. It was $2.75 Canadian. It is a product of Spain.
Here is a photo of the ingredients list. In Canada you can trust the ingredients lists on food products. By law any gluten ingredient must be listed in plain language, so if the product doesn't contain BROW (barley, rye, oats and wheat) and it's not high risk like flour or cereals (they need to be labelled gluten-free) then you are good to go.
Also the product is labelled "gluten free on the front"! So I bought one to test out.
Here is one of the side panels showing that the potato salad is made with "natural ingredients". It is "ready to eat" and "no need to refigerate". On the ingredients list photo you can see that the "best before date" is 2026-MR-11. This is perfect for my long shelf life food. I make sure to keep a note on my kit with the best before dates, so that I can use them up and replace before they expire.
Here is the Commitment Statement indicating that Carretilla uses their own process to keep the food fresh and give it a long shelf life.
Here is what the potato salad looks like when first opened.
Here is the Carretilla's gluten-free potato salad after giving it a mix. I think it looks yummy.
This is a keeper! I will buy again. I was worried about the tuna. I've never had a potato salad with canned tuna before, but I found it very tasty and not overwhelming. And it adds some more protein to the meal.
As you can see this is a creamy potato salad with cubes of potato, carrots, peas, olives, egg and tuna. I like the texture and flavour. The sauce is a little looser that my homemade potato salad, but still yum. I loved that you can see all the ingredients. Very fresh flavour. My only complaint is that it was a little salty for my taste, but I will buy it for my emergency kit and when I'm out travelling and need a quick gluten-free meal.
I will be reviewing more gluten-free shelf stable foods in the future as I build out my Emergency Kits.
