I was walking down the ice cream aisle in search of a creamy, gluten-free treat. If you're a celiac like me, you know that the frozen dessert aisle can be emotional. I paused in front of the freezer doors, feeling my usual dread! Will I be disappointed? Being celiac means treats are complicated. Well, food in general, but I digress. I really missed the pre-celiac days, when I could just browse the aisles, and grab the first fun ice cream treat I saw, without having to read through the ingredients lists searching for BROW ingredients (Barley, Rye, Oat, Wheat). It is so disappointing to see the perfect-looking treat only to find that it has barley malt, or wheat in it.
I stood in front of the ice cream freezer scanning the choices, here were ice cream cookie sandwiches (a disaster waiting to happen), chocolate-dipped cones (nope), treats covered in cookie crumbs (sigh). I swear being a celiac means grocery shopping has become something like a treasure hunt - and most of the time, the treasure chest turns out to be empty or full of gluten. Just when I thought I'd have to settle for my usual fruit popsicle - I saw it.
The Chapman's ice cream treats section in the Safeway freezer. Now, I already knew that Chapman's, a great Canadian company, took gluten-free seriously, and has some delicious gluten-free products. I had already tried their:
I was craving a special holiday ice cream treat! This time of year there are all kinds of holiday ice creams, but they usually contain gluten in the form of barley malt or wheat (cones, cookies, crumbs) in the ingredients. But, wait a minute now, what is that box in between the Vanilla Chocolate Covered Frosty Bars and the Fudge Frosty Bars??
Chapman's Super Frosty Neapolitan Bars. They have "Gluten-Free" on the front! Yeah!!!!! Well, I whipped open the freezer door and grabbed one of the boxes. This is a new gluten-free find for me. I did a quick scan of the ingredients, all looked good. Into my cart that box went.
I was in heaven! These Neapolitan Bars were so good! The crunchy snap of the chocolate coating at the top, and then creamy strawberry ice cream. Yum! Ending with a lovely smooth and sweet vanilla.
Yes indeed, I had a second one.
Here is the box with a bar beside. The cost $8.49 Canadian for 18 bars per box.
Everyone in the family loved them.
As you can see by the ingredients list on the side of the box, it is safe for celiacs. In Canada, gluten can't be hidden and stating a product is gluten-free means it is gluten-free safe for celiacs. I have written a blog about Canada's gluten-free labelling laws if you are interested in learning more.
Absolutely.
In fact, next time I was in Safeway I bought another box.
If you would like to learn more about this product or the company, here is a link to the Chapman's website. They take food allergies seriously. This product is not only gluten-free, but also peanut/nut free and egg free.
When I was looking through Chapman's website I saw they have a gluten-free recipe section. I'm looking forward to trying their recipes and letting you know how they turned out. Have you tried them? How did you like them?
What is your favourite Chapman's gluten-free ice cream or treat?
